Many newer carpets are treated with Scotch Gard ™ or a similar rug and carpet protector. If you’re out of luck on that department, there’s no need to stress out. Follow along these great suggestions for how to get lipstick, foundation, mascara and other makeup stains out of carpet.

Wet or Dry Makeup Stains

Powder based makeups usually don’t provide too much trouble to remove from your carpet. However; most liquid makeup products are oil based, which can make them a bit tricky to remove.

Rejuvenate’s carpet cleaning spray has powerful enzymes, that help break down and remove difficult stains like oil, grease and pigmentation (including makeup!) without the need for heavy scrubbing.

So here you go, our top steps for cleaning makeup stains out of carpet.

Foundation Stains

For wet makeup stains, like liquid foundation or concealer, use a spoon and a clean towel to scoop up and remove any excess makeup from the surface of the carpet. Work carefully so as not to push the spilled material further down into the fibers.

  • Generously spray the Rejuvenate carpet cleaner on the stained area.

  • Use a clean microfiber cloth or sponge to gently work the cleaner across the surface of the carpet.

  • If necessary, repeat the first two steps until the stain is gone.

  • Let sit overnight – the stained area will continue to lighten.

  • In the morning, or when the carpet is dry to the touch, use a vacuum to lift and revive the fibers.

Lipstick Stains

Bright red lipstick on your white carpet – UGH! Lipstick, lip gels and lip gloss have one thing in common – they are filled with emollients like beeswax, cocoa butter and mineral oil – which can make a greasy mess if they ever wind up on your carpet.

  1. Use a dull knife to carefully lift up and remove any remaining chunks of lipstick from the carpet.

  2. Spray the area with the carpet spot and stain remover.

  3. Gently blot or agitate the stain with a clean microfiber towel. As the towel becomes stained with lipstick, move to a clean portion and continue working.

  4. Continue spraying and blotting until the stain is gone.

  5. Let dry overnight, or until dry to the touch, then vacuum the carpet to fluff up the fibers.

Mascara and Eyeliner Stains

Usually in shades of dark brown or black – the lighter the carpet – the more difficult it can be to remove mascara and liquid eyeliner.

  1. Grab your bottle of carpet cleaner and spray the stained area.

  2. Use a microfiber towel or clean sponge to carefully work the cleaner into the carpet.

  3. Continue spraying and working with the towel until the stain is gone.

  4. You may want to leave a damp towel over the area overnight, this will let the stain remover continue to work its magic!

  5. Let dry then vacuum to fluff up the carpet fibers.

Powder Stains

Facial powder, blush, eyeshadow and other powder spills usually clean up in no time – making them some of the easier makeup stains to remove from carpet. For these type of makeup stains, first vacuum the area to remove as much of the dry, loose material before proceeding with these tips.

If some of the powder has become embedded in the fibers, follow these steps.

  1. Spray the area to be treated with the carpet cleaning product.

  2. Use a microfiber towel or clean sponge to gently agitate the carpet cleaner.

  3. When the carpet is dry to the touch, fluff up the fibers using a vacuum.
